The Top 40 IM Skills
The global Intelligent Mobility (IM) market is expected to be worth £900 billion by 2025, according to a report by Transport Catapult Systems. In their research, they identified the critical skills required by the UK if we are, as a nation, to secure significant share of that growth in smart transport.
Whilst STEM subjects and technological competencies unsurprisingly rate highly in the skills matrix, human factors and social sciences also feature heavily in IM job requirements.
Of course, knowing what those skills are and finding them are worlds apart. The universal skills gap continues to add extra pressure to the growing needs of the UK’s IM start-ups and think tanks, as everyone fights for talent on a global scale.
IM Talent is Out There – You Just Need to Know Where to Look
As with all new areas of technology, including AI, machine learning and IoT, a great deal more needs to be done between now and 2025 to get more IT professionals into the industry and skill them up. There are initiatives in process to encourage students, graduates and women into IM roles, as well as training and CPD to help others to develop their skills to move into new IM-related careers, but it’s important not to overlook the existing skillset held by many people already throughout the UK. They have a lot to offer.
For those professionals who can see the incredible opportunity of moving into the IM space, the advice is to build on one or more of the following skills, ensuring your knowledge is current, and absorb yourself in the developments surrounding smart transportation and smart cities. Only then will you be able to see how your skills can be adapted to solve tomorrow’s IM problems.
